Asma Al-Assad Files for Divorce in Russian Court, Claims Turkish Media
Web Desk: Turkish media outlets have reported that Asma Al-Assad, the wife of ousted Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, has filed for divorce in a Russian court. The reports suggest that Asma intends to separate from her husband and relocate to the United Kingdom.
Two weeks ago, before opposition forces captured the Syrian capital Damascus, Bashar Al-Assad fled to Russia with his family.
According to Turkish media reports, Asma Al-Assad is unhappy living in Moscow and wishes to return to the UK, where she was born, raised, and educated. Asma still holds British citizenship and reportedly plans to reunite with her mother in England.
The reports also claim that Asma’s mother has engaged a UK-based legal firm to facilitate her daughter’s return. The firm has advised that Asma’s return to the UK might not be straightforward due to various obstacles, including allegations of corruption, embezzlement, and other charges. These issues have reportedly arisen due to a significant increase in her wealth during her tenure as Syria’s First Lady.
Additionally, Turkish media highlighted health concerns as a potential reason for her move. In May 2024, the Syrian presidential office announced that 48-year-old Asma Al-Assad had been diagnosed with leukemia and required specialized treatment. The statement indicated she would need to isolate herself as part of her medical protocol, leading to reduced public engagements.
The media claims that Moscow does not provide adequate medical facilities for her condition, which is another reason she seeks to move to London. However, the UK legal firm has reportedly informed her mother that Asma’s return would only be feasible if she separates from Bashar Al-Assad.
This development adds another dimension to the turbulent lives of the Al-Assad family, raising questions about the future of Syria’s former First Lady and the political implications of her potential move to the UK.
