Half of Karachi’s Population Faces Water Shortage: Sindh Chief Minister
Government Working on Four Projects and New Hub Canal, Says Murad Ali Shah
Karachi, Web Desk – Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that half of Karachi’s population is grappling with a severe water shortage. To address this crisis, the government is working on four water supply projects and constructing a new Hub Canal.
During a meeting at the Chief Minister’s House, the British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Ms. Jane Marriott, met with Chief Minister Shah. Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Agha Wasif, was also present. Discussions centered around climate change, post-flood recovery efforts, education, and other key issues.
Highlighting the challenges faced by Sindh, Ms. Marriott noted that post-flood recovery remains a major hurdle for the provincial government. Chief Minister Shah elaborated on the extensive damage caused by the 2022 floods, which devastated agriculture, roads, and irrigation systems, leaving over 2.1 million people homeless and severely damaging 23,000 schools.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the Sindh government has launched climate-resilient projects to ensure sustainable recovery. He expressed gratitude to the UK government for its support during difficult times, stressing that irrigation system restoration has been prioritized to stabilize the economy and revitalize agriculture.
On education, Murad Ali Shah stated that the reconstruction of damaged schools is progressing rapidly, acknowledging the exceptional assistance provided by relief organizations.
Discussions also touched on industrial development, particularly the establishment of special economic zones. Ms. Marriott underscored the importance of fostering industrial growth in Karachi, a critical port city.
Chief Minister Shah detailed the government’s commitment to economic progress through public-private partnerships with local and international investors.
Regarding Karachi’s water supply challenges, he revealed that 50% of the city’s population lacks access to clean drinking water. The government is actively working on four water supply initiatives, including the construction of the new Hub Canal, to address the issue.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to resolving critical issues, improving education, and fostering industrial and economic development in Sindh through collaborative efforts.
