National Interest Should Always Come First, Says Sharjeel Memon

KARACHI Web Desk, March 18, 2025 – Senior Sindh Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has emphasized that national interest should always take precedence over politics. He criticized Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its refusal to participate in a crucial in-camera briefing on national security, calling it a “regrettable” decision.

Memon stated that Pakistan is facing a significant terrorism challenge, and the entire nation stands united against it. He alleged that the recent wave of terrorism is being fueled by hostile foreign elements. Despite the importance of the security briefing, PTI chose to stay away, missing an opportunity to raise its concerns in an official forum.

India’s Alleged Involvement in Terrorism

Speaking at the Sindh Assembly Media Corner, Memon asserted that security agencies have concrete evidence linking India to terrorist activities in Pakistan. He recalled the tragic October 18 attack on Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) workers and pointed out that PPP has always vocally condemned terrorism.

“Terrorist organizations have consistently targeted the PPP, yet we have never hesitated to take a firm stance against extremism. Unlike PTI, which continues to politicize security matters, we have always stood for national stability,” he said.

PTI’s Track Record on Security Issues

Memon accused PTI of undermining national security by refusing to engage in critical discussions. He reminded the public that major security lapses, such as the Army Public School (APS) attack and the Bannu Jailbreak, occurred under PTI’s government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“Today, the situation in KP is so dire that the Chief Minister cannot visit his own constituency, and law enforcement struggles to maintain control after dark. PTI must acknowledge its failures instead of deflecting blame,” he stated.

United Effort Needed to Address Security Challenges

The Sindh minister stressed that all political parties, institutions, and security agencies must work together to counter the growing threats. He warned that the unrest in Balochistan could spread nationwide if decisive actions are not taken.

Responding to a question about past incidents, Memon condemned PTI’s social media campaigns that allegedly targeted national institutions, particularly following the Quetta Corps Commander accident and the Jaffer Express tragedy. He suggested that PTI’s online supporters, in collaboration with foreign elements, are actively trying to destabilize Pakistan.

Firm Stance on Water Dispute

On another front, Memon reaffirmed PPP’s firm opposition to any construction of unauthorized canals on the Indus River. He declared that the Sindh government will never compromise on its water rights and has successfully passed a resolution in the Sindh Assembly against such projects.

“This is a clear message from our leadership—no matter what happens, we will not allow the construction of any canals on the Indus River. We will take journalists to visit the site after Eid so they can witness the situation firsthand,” he added.

Crackdown on Illegal Immigration

Memon also addressed concerns about illegal immigration, dismissing PTI’s stance on the issue as “reckless and irresponsible.” He stressed that no country in the world allows illegal immigrants to roam freely, and Pakistan should be no exception.

In conclusion, the Sindh minister reiterated that Pakistan’s security and national interests should remain above political agendas. He urged all stakeholders to come together and take a unified approach against terrorism, rather than exploiting security challenges for political gains.
