Most University Vice Chancellors Are Destroying Institutions: Sindh Chief Minister Responds to Teachers’ Protests

Karachi web desk: Academic activities in 17 universities across Sindh have come to a halt following proposed amendments to the Sindh Universities Act by the provincial government.

Protesting the amendments, the Federation of All Pakistan Academic Staff Association staged demonstrations outside Karachi Press Club, while similar protests took place in Hyderabad.

The teachers expressed strong opposition to the proposed changes, particularly the appointment of bureaucrats as university vice chancellors, calling it unacceptable.

On the other hand, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah defended the amendments, stating, “Most of our vice chancellors lack administrative experience and are destroying universities.”

He also accused the Federal Higher Education Commission (HEC) of inciting unrest within Sindh’s universities. “The HEC sent a letter opposing our new process for vice chancellor appointments. However, the government knows how to implement its decisions. Whatever standards the assembly sets, the government will enforce them,” Shah asserted.

The standoff highlights growing tensions between academia and the provincial government, with both sides holding firm to their positions. The future of higher education in Sindh hangs in the balance as the protests continue.
