Karachi Web Desk: In a decisive move to enhance road safety and prevent fatal accidents, the Sindh government has launched a large-scale crackdown on unfit commercial vehicles operating across the province. Acting on the directives of Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, the Transport Department has initiated strict measures to eliminate the presence of unsafe vehicles from the roads.
Immediate and Effective Action Ordered
The Transport Department has issued clear instructions to all relevant authorities to take swift and effective action against unfit commercial vehicles. Many of these vehicles are reportedly using fitness certificates issued by motor vehicle inspectors from other provinces, raising serious concerns about their roadworthiness.
Concerns Over Fake Fitness Certificates
According to the Transport Department, numerous commercial vehicles registered in other provinces are operating permanently within Sindh without undergoing a physical inspection by Sindh’s Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs). This means they have not been certified through the prescribed procedures, making their fitness certifications highly questionable.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Many vehicles on Sindh’s roads have been issued fitness certificates by other provinces, but we suspect that these certificates were granted without proper inspections. This raises serious doubts about their authenticity and reliability.”
Unfit Vehicles: A Growing Threat to Public Safety
The presence of unfit commercial vehicles is a significant contributor to road accidents, endangering both drivers and pedestrians. Mechanical failures in such vehicles increase the risk of life-threatening incidents, adding to the alarming number of road fatalities in the province.
Memon stressed, “Faulty vehicles put the lives of drivers and pedestrians at constant risk. This crackdown is essential to curb accidents caused by unfit commercial transport.”
Mandatory Fitness Certification for All Commercial Vehicles
To ensure transparency and road safety, the Sindh government has mandated all registered commercial vehicles to obtain new fitness certificates issued by Sindh’s Motor Vehicle Inspectors. These certificates will incorporate modern security features, including QR codes, to prevent forgery and enhance verification.
Additionally, commercial vehicles registered in other provinces but operating permanently in Sindh will also be required to secure fitness certification from Sindh authorities. The government has made it compulsory for all commercial vehicles to present a valid QR-coded fitness certificate during route permit issuance or renewal.
Strict Measures for Drivers and Operators
In a further effort to improve road safety, all commercial vehicle drivers must now hold valid driving licenses. This measure is aimed at ensuring that only qualified and responsible drivers operate public and commercial transport, reducing the likelihood of accidents caused by human error.
