Sindh Government to Conduct Medical Screenings for Students to Address Drug Abuse in Educational Institutions

Initial Screenings to Begin in Government Colleges Across Sindh

KARACHI Web Desk:
In a significant move to combat the rising issue of drug abuse in educational institutions, the Sindh government has decided to introduce medical screenings for students. Initially, this program will be implemented in government colleges across the province.

According to the notification, a three-member committee has been formed to oversee the initiative. This committee comprises the Director-General of Colleges Sindh, the Regional Director of the relevant district, and the principal of the respective college.

The committee has been assigned clear terms of reference (TORs), which include unannounced visits to government colleges. During these visits, a medical screening team will conduct tests on students, supported by the College Education Department’s officials.

Speaking to Express News, Sindh Director-General of Colleges, Dr. Naveed Rabb stated, “The Health Department teams will be responsible for carrying out the screenings.” We are currently finalizing guidelines with the Health Department regarding the selection criteria for colleges and the parameters for student screenings.”

When asked about student consent for the screenings, Dr. Rabb acknowledged that methods to encourage participation are still being determined. He also emphasized that multiple departments, including Sindh’s Anti-Narcotics Department, are collaborating to ensure educational institutions are free from this menace.

Additionally, the notification highlighted that seminars, workshops, and awareness sessions would also be conducted in educational institutions. These sessions aim to educate students about the dangers of drug abuse and its adverse effects on their education and future prospects.

This initiative marks a crucial step towards safeguarding the youth and creating a healthier learning environment in Sindh’s educational institutions.
