Washington: U.S. Government Engages with Rebel Group for Comprehensive Governance in Syria

Washington: The U.S. government has reached out to the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which opposes the Bashar al-Assad regime, urging the establishment of a comprehensive government in Syria.

According to reports, through coordination with its Middle Eastern allies and Turkey, the Biden administration has communicated to Syrian authorities the importance of forming a transitional government through an inclusive process, rather than unilateral leadership.

Foreign media outlets report that some lawmakers on Capitol Hill have pressed the Biden administration to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, particularly on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, arguing that these restrictions hinder recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, life is gradually returning to normal in the Syrian capital, Damascus, following a three-day curfew. Banks and marketplaces have reopened, signaling a return to routine activities.

Syria’s interim Prime Minister, Mohammed al-Bashir, stated that stability is essential for the Syrian people and that efforts to reorganize institutions are ongoing.

It is noteworthy that efforts are underway to establish a provisional government structure in Syria following the downfall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the subsequent control by rebel factions.

In this regard, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham leader Mohammed al-Bashir has been appointed as the interim Prime Minister of Syria until March next year.
